Yesterday would have been Mary's 14th birthday. (In case you are new to our blog, back in May, my husband's two youngest sisters were killed in a horrific car crash. We are still in a daily struggle to make it back to the surface of this thing called life.)
I could feel Sam's anguish as he realized her birthday was approaching, and I wanted to do something. After talking things out with a couple friends, I came up with an idea, based upon a small chapter from Mary's own life.
When we were on vacation in 2010, Mary had been wandering up the shore of Lake Michigan, in search of a dead seagull we had found the night before. To her dismay, it had washed away with the tide, but then, as she walked further down, she found a small teddy bear, tied to a bunch of balloons!
She named the bear Cinnamon, and it quickly became beloved toy! She carried him all over, even took him swimming with her, and loved him so much Sam's mom is writing a children's book about him!
She was so thrilled to have him! We eventually found out he had floated across Lake MI from the direction of a Wisconsin toy store, and he was mailed back to find his original owner. They sent a replacement bear, but he wasn't the same.
With her joy in mind, I decided the best way we could remember Mary on her birthday, was to take a stuffed bear, and send him on his way in a balloon bouquet, in hopes he could make some other child just as happy!
So that's what we did!
Happy birthday, Miss Mary. We miss you so much, and hope you enjoyed the show yesterday!
